"Are you ever going to upgrade your phone?"

December 1st, 2009 at 06:53 am

That's what a friend asked me last weekend. "That's like the first phone I had!" It's kind of funny she said that, since I never really think about the style of cell phone I have. It's definitely not the latest & greatest, and it wasn't even the latest & greatest when I got it. But:
(a) it was cheap
(b) it still works

I think I got it about 3 years ago. I was almost out of a 2-year contract and didn't want to pay for a brand new phone or get a new phone free with another 2-year contract. So, I got a refurbished one for cheap. It was a flip phone with a camera. I never used the camera, and started having problems with the phone, so I turned it back in for another refurbished flip phone with no camera and went with prepay when the contract ran out.

I'll never fit in with the crowd, and I'll never be a trendsetter! LOL

It makes me realize just how far behind the times I am when it comes to techno-gadgets and keeping up with things. No cable, no satellite tv, no tivo, no dvr, my digital camera is 7-8 years old, no texting, no facebook, no twitter, no myspace. My car is from the mid-90's.

I do, however, have satellite internet, so it can't be all bad!

Frugalson gets this phone question at work ALL the time - he's a tracphone user.

He tells them, "If you want to pay the monthly bill for me to have a newer one? Pay up! For me, this one works and I'm in tighter control of how much I spend using it."

I think he filled it up twice @$32.99 a pop last year - so spending about $66 a year to have an emergency phone available isn't too bad. The phone itself is an old one of mine. In fact, I'm the one most likely to ask if he's got his on him to make a quick call home to Hubster or to let others know when we'll be arriving someplace.

How it's anyone's business what type of phone he (or you) has or how often they are upgraded is beyond me!
Seem awfully rude and if someone asked me such a thing I'd likely tell them so and ask them how it was any of their business.

I'm rather low-tech myself. Ehhh, the species survived a long time with minimal technology, I think we'll make it thru.

I am another Tracfone user. I don't care that my phone isn't the latest. It works great, and I'm quite happy with it.

We (DH, myself, DDs) are Tracfone users. I am shocked to see how many of my daughters' friends (and they are 11 and 12) have drop down touch Apple whatevers. Santa brought their $9.99 phones last year and we have filled them up three times each. They chip in their allowances for minutes. They have these phones simply so I can reach them now that they are bigger and spending more times with friends and at school activities. Nice thing is if they lose the phone, it is no biggie to replace. And they do text message, though my girls don't seem to do much of that. (yet?)

I tend to replace mine every 4 years. HEck, the most recent upgrade was unnecessary overall, and I got just about the same model anyway. I know most my friends think the same thing. Seems they have a new phone every 2 minutes.

I have a clunker trac phone, too. It is okay until I need to use it in a phone cue. Then I hate it. I do have separate land line, but that is an oldie, too. Whatever. Who cares?

I got a free phone on a monthly plan a year ago, as it is cheaper for us to have mobiles than use our landline. (We have the landline for our internet). DF's phone is paid for by his work.
For some reason I always seem to have a fairly new phone - but it is a different story with other things. Most of my 'gadgets' are given to me by my dad, and I see no reason to upgrade them at all until they completely stop working.

Wow! Lots of support from other oldie-but-goodie phone users.

LuxLiving - This particular friend frequently says things that are a little rude, but I just shrug it off and go with the flow. It's probably one of the reasons we don't do more things together. I enjoy spending time with her in small doses, but I'm always on guard for the questions. "why do you do..." or most often about my husband's buying habits, as in "what does he need THAT for?!?" I just make some silly remark as in "why not?" and go on.

It's funny how often people comment on my old phone. It's beat up, but reliable and it doesn't cost me extra money, so I'm cool with it. I do like some of the features of the iPhones and Blackberries, but the costs that they lead to are not worth it for me at the moment. I'd totally want electronics insurance on anything like that, too... if my current phone bites the dust, it's a cheap replacement.
