Cut & color, please...

January 15th, 2009 at 04:19 pm

I'm on my way shortly to get my hair cut & colored. I don't know why, but I'm too chicken to try to color it myself. The directions don't look all that difficult, but I just never have tried it. Instead, I go pay $45 every 5-6 weeks to do it. It seems like a lot to spend in the name of vanity, but from what I've seen at the roots I don't think I could handle just letting it go.

Why am I chicken? How hard could it be? I really think it all comes back to having a mother that didn't bother coloring her hair and just having brothers. No one to experiment with! I had friends in high school & college, of course, but I think the most extreme anyone ever did as far as hair color was bleaching a little streak or maybe washing in a funky color for Halloween. We just didn't experiment like I think is more common now. Heck, maybe there wasn't even do-it-yourself kits "way back then"! LOL. It was just during the 70's & 80's. Seems like just yesterday.

I guess I look at it as my one luxury. I don't do tanning, or massages, or manicures & pedicures, spa treatments, facials, or any of the other girly extras. Maybe I'm entitled to go let someone else color, wash, cut & dry my hair as long as I can afford it. After all, I cut way back on my diet coke addiction starting this year. Surely I have some money left over to put toward the hair treatment!!!

I color and frost my own hair, my daughter's hair, and cut my son and daughter's hair... but I did go to hair school for a while.

I color my own hair and I must admit that there have been a couple of occassions when I wondered what the hell happened! Now I don't experiment with different shades, I just stick to the one I know!

I say keep doing what you're doing. I'm sure you're not smoking a $6 pack a day, or eating out often. If you go get your hair done every 5 weeks, it's $468 a year. If you could squeeze it to every 7 weeks, it would be $334, a savings of 134. I would never color my own, I've seen too many bad dye jobs! I only highlight my hair once a year, if that, just to treat myself( if I've gotten a GC for my bday!)

I, of course, being a man, never even considered coloring my hair. That said, my wife does and it seems easy. She puts on an old tie-dye shirt, goes down to the slop sink, shampoos this stuff in, let's it set a little while and washes it out. Not too tough. Also, she gets the box from CVS which I am certain is cheaper than $45.00.

All that aside, you work hard, raise a family, are focused on your expenses and certainly, without a doubt, deserve to be pampered a little every month or so. God bless.

Good for you! I don't think you need to justify your upkeep (that is unless you are like my best friend who is a very poor money manager who can't pay her bills. But she'll look good in court with her tanned skin, colored hair, manicured hands, pedicured feet, and carrying her organically-fed pooch in his leather bomber jacket (price tag $50 on clearance!) I know, a bit snarky, but she complained about poor she is again today. School was cancelled and she's not paid (she's a contract employee). Lost money for her: $250 after taxes.

I agree, that if you can afford to keep doing it and it's something you enjoy, keep doing it. However, to play devils advocate, you could always try it with the box and then if it turns out poorly, you could get it fixed at a salon. But I've colored my hair several times, and many of my friends have. The only time we had any problems was when trying to add highlights.

I have been coloring my hair since I was in my 20's. (a long time ago) It is really hard to mess up. Just put the stuff on, let it sit for about 30 minutes and then wash it out.

Thanks for the varying opinions. Some day I may try it, but for now I won't be brave. Mom-sense, your snarky friend comment cracked me up. Just recently, I commented to my SS about one of his cousins whose hands were just dripping with rings. He said he never noticed, which made me laugh. All that money to show off and some people don't even notice! Then I mentioned her nails and highlighted hair, and he said "all the girls do that nowadays". To which I replied, "oh, I always thought it was the ones that could least afford it!" Your comment proves me right! LOL

I used to color my own, it is messy and you stain towels way too much. Yours is a bargain compared to the rates out here ~$120 cut/color (I go to a middle of the road salon, not to the Supercuts type place).
